Private Instagram viewers are scams: how to spot them

No website or app can show you a private Instagram account’s stories, posts or followers without the owner accepting your follow request. Anything that says otherwise is a scam. That includes the ones with convincing progress bars.

Why it can’t be done

A private account’s content is only sent to accounts the owner has approved. It isn’t sitting somewhere public waiting to be found. A viewer site can only get what an approved follower could see, so the only way to see a private account is to be approved. A site that could get around that would be exploiting a serious security hole, and Instagram fixes those quickly.

How the scams work

• “Human verification.” You type a username, a fake progress bar “decrypts” the profile, then you’re asked to prove you’re human by completing surveys, installing apps or entering a phone number. The site earns money for each one. The profile never appears.
• Password phishing. The site asks you to “log in with Instagram” on a page that isn’t Instagram. Your account is then used for spam or sold.
• Paid unlocks. You pay a “one-time fee” or a subscription. You get nothing, or a blurred picture taken from the account’s public profile photo.
• Malware apps. Apps outside the official stores that promise private viewing and ask for broad permissions on your phone.

Signs you’re looking at a scam

• It promises private accounts at all.
• It asks for your Instagram password, or for you to “log in with Instagram” on its own page.
• It makes you complete surveys, install apps or enter a phone number before showing anything.
• It shows fake “live activity” like “Sarah from Texas just unlocked a profile”.
• It shows a countdown or a progress bar for something that should be instant.

If you already entered your password

1. Change your Instagram password straight away, and anywhere else you used the same one.
2. Turn on two-factor authentication in Instagram’s settings.
3. Check Accounts Center for logins you don’t recognise and log them out.
4. If you paid, contact your bank or card provider about a chargeback.
